Military plane crashes into black sea

The plane, which was on its way to Latakia in Syria, was carrying 81 passengers and 10 crew members, Interfax news agency reported.

The Tu-154 is a Soviet-designed three-engine airliner.

In April 2010, many high-ranking Polish officials, including then president Lech Kaczynski, were killed when a Tu-154 airliner went down in thick fog while approaching the Smolensk airport in western Russia.

Al Jazeera's Natasha Ghoneim, reporting from Moscow, said the plane disappeared from radar only minutes after takeoff. 

"Reports here in Moscow are saying that the passengers included journalists and military personnel, in addition to members of the famous Alexandrov Ensemble," Ghoneim said.

The Russian defence ministry said that the Alexandrov Ensemble was to perform at the Khmeimim airbase, Russia's main base of operations for its military campaign in support of the Syrian government.

Russia has been supporting its longtime ally Syria with a bombing campaign against rebel groups for more than a year. 

Rescue services of aviation units of the Southern Military District in Krasnodar and neighbouring regions were engaged in the search for the plane wreckage, the defence ministry said.

Islamic state power in Middle East

Slat or mesh armour has been commonplace on combat vehicles for some 10 years, with a history of development dating back 60 years or more. This armour type generally takes the form of a metal grid, mesh, or bars, and is most commonly fitted over conventional plate armour. IS VBIED designers have adopted this effective and lightweight add-on armour type. Slat armor serves to impede the proper function of many types of AT munitions that use a point-initiation, base-detonating (PIBD) fuzing system. The armour accomplishes this by either damaging the munition on impact, or by preventing the optimal impact angle to function the fuze. In the event that the munition does function correctly, slat armour can provide an increased stand-off distance, negatively impacting the armour penetration capabilities of many munition types.

These design improvements have proven effective and have accelerated the anti-tank weapon requirements of forces in conflict with the Islamic State.  Forces aligned against IS in Iraq have received anti-tank guided weapons (ATGW) to counter the continual improvements to SVBIED design. These comparatively advanced weapon systems are designed to defeat the armour of main battle tanks and have proven very effective against IS armoured SVBIEDs. The Islamic State have themselves been targeted by VBIED attacks executed by other militant groups, and have deployed ATGWs  to counter this threat in some areas.

VIDEO – World’s most terrifying tourist attraction shut down

The world’s most terrifying tourist attraction has been shut down
after frightening photos emerged of tourists balanced on a raft feeding
meat – to crocodiles .

The
young holidaymakers clambered aboard a make-shift cage kept afloat with
plastic barrels just inches from the 10ft long killer reptiles.
They
used canes to dangle lumps of beef over the jaws of the reptiles
– which then leapt from the water to snatch their lunch.
Pictures
taken by shocked motorcycle-taxi rider Jon Nok show hundreds of crocs
circling the raft in a pond used for crocodile farming at the Elephant
Kingdom in Chonburi, Thailand.

The images viral after he posted them on Twitter – sparking police and government officials to rush to the attraction.

Jon, 40, said: ‘I’ve bee a taxi driver for more than 20 years and never seen anything like this before.
‘It
looks so dangerous I just had to take a picture. The tourists were all
Chinese and some of them were scared, others were enjoying it.
‘People have been shocked to see that this happens.’

Social
media users were stunned by the activity – with some saying it was
cruel to tease the crocodiles by dangling food then pulling it away.

Police, soldiers and government officials raced to to the crocodile farm last on Friday hours after pictures went viral.
It has since been closed down for 90 days while safety checks are carried out.

Uthen Youngprapakorn, owner of the tourist attraction which is part
of a crocodile farm, said that he had offered the rides on the cage
after growing demand from Chinese tourists.

He said: ‘We don’t put more than 15 people in a cage at a time. But they can hold more than this.
‘There have never been any problems and visitors are very happy. We always watch everything very closely.

The post war world was full of hope for African nationalists and independence movements. India was granted its independence in 1947 and Africans were hopeful that similar provisions could be made in their own continent. At first, British plans for the relatively under-developed African colonies seemed to be rather slow in emerging. It would take another 10 years before the Gold Coast received its independence as Ghana. Nigeria was not too far behind in getting its independence. These were examples of relatively successful economies at least by colonial standards. The British government was generally content to hand over independence to viable political units although they were wary of being left holding the uneconomic colonies at the end of this process. Tanganyika was firmly in this latter category. They therefore proposed the creation of large federated political units. They created the British East Africa Federation in the 1950s combining Kenya with Tanganyika and Uganda. Many black Africans were concerned that this was a scheme designed to prolong colonial rule. Although the scheme collapsed more because of the violence of the Mau Mau rebellion north in Kenya.
